Travel Writing From Your Own Backyard

By Nadia Ali

"You need to take a deep breath and see your area as a visitor or tourist would. Where are the best places to go, the points of historical/natural beauty?"

Have you ever thought about becoming a travel writer, but don't think you've been anywhere exciting to write about? Well, that may not be true. I became a travel writer by first writing about what I knew and that was the place where I lived. You need to take a deep breath and see your area as a visitor or tourist would. Where are the best places to go, the points of historical/ natural beauty? You might be surprised how much your local area can sound appealing once you get going.

Then pitch, pitch, pitch. I began writing travelogues of about 150 words or less. The topics were things like restaurants, entertainment, sightseeing, and accommodation, all near where I lived. Suddenly, where I lived was turning into a wealth of interest, without even having to travel abroad.

I dropped into the local Tourism Office and picked up a bag full of leaflets, a calendar of events, posters, tourist newsletter stickers and even pencils...every writer's friend after the keyboard. Armed with the numerous tourist booklets, I turned to the yellow pages, which I found very helpful to source listings of all categories and not just those highlighted in the tourist information booklets. With the aid of online resources, and what I already knew, I just had to weave the words that held it all together.

It was great. I knew so much about the tourism industry I was rearing to go. The travel site loved my style of writing and offered me City Guides to write, which paid a lot more than the travelogues. As my confidence grew, I sent off queries to other travel sites which yielded a good response.

Here I am, a travel writer for my country, writing travel articles now with supporting photographs, which we all know are becoming a part of the accepted or rejected clause.

So while I aim at becoming an excellent travel writer, I constantly send off queries in other genres that interest me.

But for now, with my digital camera in hand, my bag of tourist information, yellow pages, internet access and my faithful keyboard, I am a travel writer. You too can explore this avenue of freelancing writing about your country. The local tourist boards will gladly supply you with all the information you need and upon request they will allow you free use of their stock photographs too.

So don't plan a vacation to write about, just look outside your window. You're already there.

LOOKING FOR A COMPLETED EDGY FEATURE SCRIPT

I am looking for a completed edgy feature script with a twist ending. The script may be a drama or a thriller with a crime/caper element.

I am interested in stories where the protagonist gets in over his/her head in a situation, but in the end the protagonist finds a way out or has masterminded the whole situation, like in the film 'The Usual Suspects.' Other films that are similar to what I am looking for are 'The Limey,' 'Layer Cake,' 'Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead,' 'Sexy Beast,' and 'Narc.'

I am NOT interested in horror, sci-fi, fantasy, or romantic comedies.

Budget will not exceed $5 million. WGA and Non-WGA writers welcome.

My directing credits include:
'Veronica Mars,' 'Tru Calling,' 'Third Watch,' 'Alias,' and 'Las Vegas.'
