Masking It

by Stacy A. Colombo

Write about an instance that you wore a mask where you were ashamed of who you were or what you looked like. How did you hide it and how did it feel? How did you attempt to be someone that your not? Author of “Autobiography of a Face,” Lucy Grealy, loved Halloween because it was a way to hide her imperfect face behind a mask. She was always looking for ways to be someone she's not (through her sexuality or by having surgery). Using one of the following quotes from “Autobiography of a Face,” write a 500 word memoir about your mask(s):

"My life was 'different' from most people's, but it was essentially my own."
or
"No one could see me clearly. No one could see my face."
