GUEST ARTICLE
Free Love – Free Spirit – Free Lance
By Arlene Weiss
The first time I thought about becoming a free-lance writer, my best friend said, “Dummy, don’t you know that free lance jobs are always for free! Okay, I thought so if I don’t get paid, at least I’ll get another sample for my “book”. But, what really pushed me over the brink was an article about the “carefree life of a free-lancer” that I came across in a magazine in my local library. This young lady wrote, and I believe these were her very words, “Girls, you have no idea how many men would be simply delighted to make love in the afternoon.”
Free love – free lance. Sounded good to me.
I then moved out to Los Angeles with my parents. After a couple of months, I got a good job working for a small ad agency that specialized in real estate. Or, more specifically, “tract homes”. I was delighted, of course, when a print campaign I created for the Sunday LA Times won a First Prize in a state-wide advertising competition.
I carefully kept samples, and when I moved back to New York, I started calling on large advertising agencies. I began getting assignments almost right away, somehow convincing the “big shots” that I could come up with some snappy copy.
My biggest “catch” was to write some one-minute radio commercials for Manischewitz Wines. Gee, it was nice opening my apartment door and finding a case of oh-so-sweet Manischewitz Wine. And, baby, in case you don’t know the territory, a case of wine means twelve big, big bottles.
There was also an unexpected outcome to the sight of this short, skinny ‘free spirit’ hustling up and down MAD Avenue. In about two or three months, I would call back at J. Walter Thompson or BBD&O and ask for the “Creative Director”. “Oh, she doesn’t work here any more”, I was told. “I believe she’s gone out on her own!” Bet you she figured out something like this, “The next time I have to stay up all night shouting the benefits of packaged beef gravy, at least I’ll be doing it for myself.”
Eventually I got married. No, he did not drop over in the afternoon, I dropped over to his place. As a struggling artist, he had no money, so unfortunately, there I was, back hustling down midtown New York – and again, doing quite well, thank you. One really great account I had was to dream up a monthly press release for Alpha Keri Skin Cream. The press agent, whom I had never met, sent me material , I wrote it up, and received a hundred-dollar check a week or so later. A perfect gig for a (by now) pregnant lady.
Then my life changed again, I split up with my husband and I moved to Chicago with friends I had met in New York. This was going to be tough. Especially if you can’t stand rotten freezing weather. I immediately got a good steady 3-day a week temp job as a typist. However, when the boss found out I was really a copywriter, he had me write HIS copy, and told me to forget the typing stuff. I continued with the temp jobs and on my lunch hour grabbed my portfolio and went up and down Michigan Avenue finally landing a wonderful account (you know us writers can’t be fussy) writing ads for toilets, faucets, tubs, stall showers, etc. My favorite headline ? “Put more room in your bathroom.”
But then computers began to take over — and I was told that no one would use me if I didn’t submit the work on a disc. Not being brave enough to learn how to work the darn thing, I gave up and went to work as a receptionist. And now guess what? Thanks to the arrival of the Internet and a son who step-by-step taught me how to function on a p.c., here I am back at writing about bathtubs and toilets and faucets and loving it.
