A WOL Publication

Hello there,

What markets you writers and editors want to see? I think I know! You want to see paying markets, always telecommute markets or telecommute freelance jobs. Am I right? Well that's exactly what we list in our JustMarkets Daily issues 6 days a week. During the last 2 weeks we had over 250 listings of that type.

So our subscribers just have to respond to the listings and start writing, editing or translating the texts as requested. That is not very difficult when you don't have to spend hours on searching for markets, right?

Of course if you want to get a job, you need a good response letter. So today we have a special article just for you. "How to Respond to Market Listings" by Karen Schweitzer will certainly explain you what and how to do it. So grab your pens and start querying.

Try to respond to one of these 12 markets previously posted in JustMarkets Daily. Or join the list of Justmarkets Daily subscribers if you want to get over 20 markets per day in your mailbox.

Good writing everyone, see you in 2 weeks!

Regards,

Kevin Rux

How to Respond to Market Listings

By Karen Schweitzer

Market listings are classified ads for freelancers. Whether you are a writer, editor, proofreader, or transcriber, a market listing is where you look to find work. The majority of these listings can be found in books, magazines, newsletters, and online.

Listings will vary, depending upon the author, but most of them will include all of the information that you need to generate a quality response and secure work for yourself. The most important thing to remember is that all of the instructions within the listing should be heeded. Do not deviate.

To start, read the entire listing from beginning to end. Take special care to note submission/application deadlines. Time is a valuable commodity. If the listing is too dated, then it may not be worth applying.

Next, pay special attention to the submission format that was requested. Some editors prefer to receive queries, applications, and manuscripts via mail, while others will only open those that are submitted electronically. Submitting your response in the wrong format can send you straight to the circular file.

No matter what format has been requested, make sure that you follow directions. If the editor asks for a SASE, provide one. If you are asked to submit attachments within the body of your email, do so. Your response is your first (and perhaps only) chance to show that you can read and comprehend instructions.

If the market listing says that you should submit a CV, resume, or bio, make sure that what you supply is neatly formatted and free of errors. You may also want to tailor your reply to the listing. For example, if the market listing indicates that writers should be fast and dependable, emphasize your ability to meet deadlines within your resume or cover letter.

When clips or writing samples are requested, always send you best work. If possible, send a sample that will be relevant to the position or assignment that you are seeking. If you don’t have anything relevant, don’t fret. Many editors only ask for clips so they can confirm that your grammar and spelling are up to par.

Regardless of what you are asked for or what type of work you are applying for, your market listing response should always be complete and professional. Double check everything before sending it out, and above all, follow the directions in the listing. Don’t try to make yourself an exception to any of the rules. Most potential employers/editors will not appreciate your non-conformity.
