Talk About Your Niche Market!

by Shelley Bueche

On Tuesdays They Played Mah Jongg, by Milton Stern, is a novel based on five menopausal, Southern Jewish women playing Mah Jongg once a week, and one gay son.  The story is told from the point of view of Michael Bern, a gay television writer in Hollywood.  He writes about his mother and her four friends, who despite triumphs, tragedies and multiple spouses, have gathered together once a week for four decades to play a game of Mah Jongg where they would ‘schmooze, gossip, .advise, listen, learn, relate, laugh, cry, curse and eat.’

I thought Tuesdays were with Morrie.  Well Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturdays and Sundays are still available.
