GUEST ARTICLE
Prospective Employers: Are they ethical and reputable?
by Pamela Pruitt-Green
Freelance writers are invariably required to submit a resume or vita along with writing samples to prospective employers in order to be considered for a project. The employer uses this information to get a more definitive picture of the writer’s experience, skill sets, and style of writing. But how is the writer assured that the employer is ethical and reputable? How does the writer know that the employer will use the writer’s information for the sole purpose of reviewing for hiring purposes?
When I was in college, I recall several instances where term papers that I wrote and submitted to professors were never returned or returned with only a letter grade—usually, lower than a B--and no comments explaining the grade. I would meet with the professor who was unable to give valid reasoning for the grade that was given. Eventually, I had to go to several department heads to finally resolve my conflicts.
One paper that I wrote for a professor dealt with Existentialism in African-American Writings. The professor gave me a C on the paper with no comments. Later that same year, he later wrote a paper with a similar topic. [Note: The professor was not African-American; nor did his vita or background reflect any experience or expertise in this area.] It took about two years for this professor to leave the school. Prior to this experience, I was very naïve about my writings. I thought that I could write a paper, submit it, and get it returned with a grade and critical comments. It was not until this experience that I began to keep all rough drafts and make copies of every thing that I submitted to others.
It is highly recommended that you not submit any information--including your resume--to an employer who gives little or no background information. Steer clear of the employers who ask for sample writings, give you few guidelines for what they want, and state that samples will not be returned, nor will writers be informed of being rejected. Send an email requesting more information. If you do not receive a response, then you should cross that employer off your list.
Look for employers that give clear and concise guidelines, which include information such as word length, subject matter, payment, expectations, and a website address. Definitely review the employer’s website. If the employer is an individual or company with only an email to contact them, send a query email first before submitting anything.
Writers cannot know if a prospective employer is reputable until some form of interaction has been established. You may never know if that employer is ethical. Protect your writing by following these simple precautions. Hopefully, they will make you feel more comfortable submitting your precious creations.
