Writing for Children – Contests To Spark Your Imagination and Theirs
by Grace Tierney
‘I find the contest, you write the entry.’
Do you remember your favourite book from your childhood? I bet you do, probably in much better detail than anything you’ve read as an adult. Did you read it over and over again? Yep, me too. That’s the great thing about writing for children, you know that their words will charm their imaginations, fire their spirit, and hopefully inspire them for a lifetime.
At this time of year any writer worth their salt should be thinking back over 2005 and doing some wishful thinking for their writing in 2006. I am doing that myself at the moment and happiness keeps coming to mind. The happiness of seeing my family during the holiday season, and the happiness of writing something of which I can be proud – whether that’s a touching greeting for a card, or a really excellent short story. If I wrote for children then I’d be thinking about the happiness I could spread through that work.
There’s two ways you can spread some writer-happiness at this time of year – one is to write something joyful for one of the ten children-writing contests I’ve listed below, and the second is to enjoy your writing. You could even combine the two in this month’s Happy News Contest (see details below). If you’re not enjoying writing then maybe your new year’s resolutions should include something about
re-discovering why you got into this writing lark in the first place. I won’t be surprised if it was because you loved reading as a child.
Thanks for a wonderful year here at Writer OnLine. I hope you all have a outrageously great holiday season, and if you’re stuck for a gift-idea this year – particularly for a child – consider buying them a book. You never know, you could be inspiring the next generation of writers.
Don’t forget to scroll down for my regular contest round-up for the coming month – there’s 25 of them awaiting your entries.
Happy Writing!

Forthcoming features will focus on speculative fiction, contests with unusual prizes, mystery writing contests, and romantic writing contests.
I’m always looking for new contest types to research so if you’re looking for a particular type of contest for your writing, just drop me a line. I’d also love to hear from you if you win a contest you read about here or if you have a contest to suggest for inclusion. Please note that I will only include contests which are open to writers anywhere in the world as our readers are geographically dispersed.
