A Journalistic Legend RetiresOne of my favorite columnists for the New York Times, William Safire, is retiring. I have been reading his political column for 25 of the 30 years he has been writing it. This Pulitzer Prize winning columnist will be a tough act to follow, as his vacated position is up for grabs. Rush Limbaugh has applied for the position along with Ann Coulter, a conservative lawyer who wrote How to Talk to a Liberal (If YouMust); Jon Stewart, comedian and political satirist; and Michael Moore author of Stupid White Men…and Other Sorry Excuses for the State of the Nation. Rush is an amusing political entertainer and author whose ditto-head followers will be dancing in the street if he gets the job. It’s enough to make a person cry. Mr. Safire is a class act who has the ability to present both sides of a story with a depth of intelligence that is always provocative. I’ll definitely miss having coffee with Bill in the morning while reading his scintillating political column. I can’t say the same for his prospective replacements. www.writerswrite.com |
