The Quill Awards: Celebrate Reading and Promote Literacy
Create excitement among consumers, bring well-deserved recognition to writers, and invigorate the marketplace…all objectives of The Quills Literacy Foundation. Most importantly, Quills wants to interest more people in buying and reading books.
Reed Business Information (RBI) and the NBC Universal Television Stations have joined forces to launch The Quill Awards (The Quills), a new national book award that honors excellence in book publishing. Winners will be awarded in 15 different categories, including Book of the Year, Rookie of the Year, and Lifetime Achievement. October 2005 will be the first Quill Award presentation and will be carried on 14 NBC Universal television stations.
The Quills executive council is comprised of CEOs from publishing, education, finance, media and entertainment. The Council will be responsible for input on awards categories, advising selection of annual distinguished service or lifetime achievement awards.
The power of the written word will finally be recognized in a celebrity-energized presentation produced in a “Golden Globes” format where the celebration of excellence in writing and publishing will be the focus. It is the hope that more interest will be generated among consumers in purchasing books that drive revenue for publishers and circulation for libraries.
Formal process of book selections will begin May 1, 2005. Using the Academy Awards and Golden Globes as a paradigm, the nominating board will be comprised of approximately 6,000 booksellers and librarians compiled from a national pool of PublishersWeekly subscribers.
