A WriterOnLine Publication

Dear Subscriber,

As I told you in a separate letter, my company, Cornet Solutions, has taken over the properties of Writer Online and its related sites. My name is Corney Vanhelden and I am the Publisher of the newsletter and the websites.

A short note about my background: Before this position I was CEO of a software development company where we developed a lot of programs that are beneficial to Cornet Solutions and so indirectly also to WOL. My hobby is hot air ballooning and I'll tell you more about that in a future issue.

With a small staff such as ours, some people are multifunctional, and I am one of those. I also run the advertising and other commercial activities around Writer Online and its sites.

It is my intention to provide you with information you can use and may need as a writer, so that you will feel at ease and comfortable with us.

As you have noticed, the layout of the newsletter has changed dramatically and I hope you will agree with us that it's for the better. We have set our sights now on the websites, which we also intend to completely overhaul.

Don’t hesitate to write me, whether positive or negative. I will make every attempt to answer you as quickly as possible.

Happy reading and enjoy the issue!!

Dear Reader!

Welcome to the re-invented Writer Online newsletter! We are very fired up about our new look and feel, and we hope you share our enthusiasm! And this is just the proverbial tip of the iceberg of what's to come!!

We have what we think is a very special issue with some exciting changes in addition to our new look. First, our very own Debi Staples has been promoted to News Editor, one of our new features. Debi has been our Assistant Publisher where she has done a great job of putting the newsletter together each issue. In addition to her job as News Editor, Debi will also be handling our contests! To help Debi, please send her any writing and industry news items you come across in your travels. Send them to news@writeronline.us. In the meantime, check out this issue's news items.

A newcomer to Writer Online, and an addition about which we are thrilled, is Peter Bowerman, author of The Well-Fed Writer and Back for Seconds, two fabulous books sharing both his own, and his readers' experiences and advice on how to make it in the commercial writing world. Peter is now our Commercial Writing Editor and for his inaugural issue of Writer Online, he introduces us to the field of commercial writing in the first of this two-part article titled "Starving Writer No More."

Screenwriting Editor Christina Hamlett ushers in the season with her article "Happily Ever Hereafter," a charming and informative look at some of the classic ghost stories of our times examined through the lens of the screenwriter.

Literary Editor M. J. Iuppa sets the stage for more to come in Writer Online's Literary Corner. In her introductory letter , she outlines submission guidelines and shares her vision.

Also on the literary front, we are honored to publish Nick DiCherio's short science fiction piece, about the dangers of information overload -- a very real threat in this day and age!

Staff writer Terrie Relf heralds the holiday with a look at horror poetry, in her piece "Want to See Something Really Scary?"

Stephanie Olsen has dug up markets galore in her Paying Markets column. And to get the latest and greatest scoops on markets, subscribe to her daily Hot Off the Press!

And last, but not least, as always, our Contest and Puzzle await you with mind-bending challenges!

Hope you enjoy the issue and keep those keyboards clicking and ink flowing!!

Until next issue

HAPPILY EVER HEREAFTER
by Christina Hamlett

"Til death do us part" has always been a popular theme at the movies, celebrating the concept of eternal soulmates and the triumphs of romance over all manner of earthly adversity. That such fidelity can endure beyond a grieving lover's good-byes at the partner's gravesite is further manifested in a memorable host of ghostly films that attest to the strength of the human spirit and all of its inherent passions… More

Probably about 50-55 spread out over 2-3 weeks … More

DRAGONHEAD

This is what you know: Kermit the frog is left-handed. Charlie Brown's father was a barber. Twenty-one percent of Americans claim to be regularly bored out of their minds. In Iowa, sixty-five traffic accidents a year are caused by cornstalks. According to Genesis 1:20-22, the chicken came before the egg. Thirteen people a year are killed by fallen vending machines. … More
