February 22, 2005 A WriterOnLine Publication
My dear readers, This is our "beat the blues" issue. You know, that mid-winter slump thing where spring seems an eternity away, your motivation is zilch, the weather sucks, and all you want to do is stay in bed with the covers over your head all day. And work? Forget it. This is the time of year when for many, the writer's block bug runs rampant. But you know what? It is our mission, right here in this issue of Writer Online, to get you up, and at 'em, and doing jumping jacks in no time!! And here's how we're going to do it… The first thing to get your juices flowing is to get that writing arm in gear and get your entry in for the Unpublished Novel Contest. Getting your first novel in print will be a real mid-winter boost, but you only have until March 3! Then try your hand at our Beat the Blues Puzzle: oh, you'll be glad you did when you breathe in the sweet scent of fresh spring flowers! Peter Bowerman is back this issue with sure-fire strategies for unblocking business by getting out there and making those cold calls. But somehow Peter makes this dreaded task quite doable in his article "Cold Calling & Follow-up: The Two Basic Food Groups of Freelance Success." You are in for a true treat with Margie Lukas' amazing story about two 85-year old twin sisters in "Eleven Minutes." Got the "don't have time" blues when it comes to attending your favorite conference? Take some advice from Regina Allen in "Any Time for a Conference or Workshop?" Terrie Relf is not about to succumb to the blahs: she shares her secrets in "Writer's Block? Never!" It's all in how you look at it. Steph Olsen takes a peek at freelance writing through the lens of a Roller Coaster Ride: now that will get your adrenaline flowing. And last is our little curmudgeon, who, I am sad to say, will no longer be with us after this issue. So, in her farewell curmudgeonly way, Pam Beers tales a look at, of all things, "Rewriting the Driver's Manual." I cannot close without sharing with you my overwhelming enthusiasm about our redesigned Writer Online Learning Center! We have a whole new slate of courses taught by professional instructors. Courses range from Introduction to English Sentences taught by Dr. George Ann Gregory, to How to Write for the Theater taught by Christina Hamlett, to Photojournalism taught by Steven Arts. In addition, we have a four course Business Certificate Program that covers material targeted to our readers and their family members who must write for business. Well then, until next issue, keep that ink flowing and those keyboards a'clacking! My warm regards, Mary Anne Donovan, Chief Editor PS: Be sure to check out the ads for great opportunities with WriterOnline and WriterOnline Learning Center!

  | Cold Calling & Follow-up: The Two Basic Food Groups of Freelance Success By Peter Bowerman Just got off the phone with a dear friend of mine (and fellow commercial writer) out in Colorado. Frankly, it was a lot rosier conversation than the one we’d had a few weeks prior... More Eleven Minutes By Margie Lukas I opened my eyes to the soft glow of the morning sun filtering in around the canvas shade. But even that dim light felt fierce and I turned my face from the window. When had I last slept well, or without my eighty-five year old twin sister beside me in the bed where both our parents had died and where Letty and I would also likely die?... More Any Time for a Conference or Workshop? By Regina Allen Working full time, going to school full time and attending clinical rotations, the time to write shortened from Saturday mornings to whenever I remembered to take a break at work or had time before classes. Attending conferences also diminished. One day, I sat down at my kitchen table and asked myself: Can I attend a conference?... More Writer's Block? Never! By Terrie Leigh Relf Ok, so I’m not a very good liar. If you could see my eyes right now, you’d know that I, too, occasionally succumb to the “Midwinter”, as well as the “whaddya- mean-spring-isn’t-here-yet?” Blues... More Roller Coaster RidE By Stephanie Olsen A long-term copywriting job goes down the drain without warning. An editor you pitched months back suddenly emails a high-paying 650-word assignment. You have to decline several article submissions for your newsletter while dealing with three disappointing rejections of your own. That $460 check finally comes in the mail. Just another day in the life of a freelance writer... More The Curmudgeon Speaks: Rewriting the Drivers' Manual By Pamela Beers Driving has become a sport I have discovered while maneuvering from country roads to city highways and back again. Because of that discovery, I think each state should re-write its driver’s manual... More |
