Germs at Your Desk? Quick, Grab the Purell!
Charles Gerba, scientist at the University of Arizona, collected samples from common work areas, in major cities throughout the country. The samples were collected from business telephones, desktops and even computer mice! He found that New York City had the most office-related germs, in over half of all offices examined. Just behind New York City, were offices in Atlanta, San Francisco, Chicago and Tucson. The germs he studied and collected were from the human Para Influenza Virus 1, the virus responsible for spreading most respiratory infections. In all offices studied, the light switch had the fewest germs. Now, turn off your lights please and get to work!
