Top 10 Trade Markets
by Nita Walker Frazier
Do you ever give the trades any thought? I confess I didn't until I started researching this column. I thought of them only as those boring magazines I was forced to read in the waiting room at the tire store (because I forgot to bring any reading material).
The trades have a narrow focus, as they are published and read primarily by members of a particular trade group. They do require some expertise in their particular business from writers. On the whole, the trades pay better than regular consumer magazines. There is practically one trade magazine for every occupation, profession or industry in the country. This translates into a lot of markets for the enterprising free-lance writer. The trades are hungry for words. They accept longer articles than the consumer magazines. A boon to those who write long.
Your challenge in writing for the trades is to expand your interests or hobbies to the point that you are an expert in the field or until you drive your friends crazy (whichever comes first).

Nita Walker Frazier is a struggling writer, trying to go full-time free-lance. She has lived in the West Texas area all of her life. She is the mother of two, ages 21 and 18. She is also foster mother to all their friends. She does not work outside the home due to medical disabilities, but volunteers her time to the local Girl Scouts as a leader and to the literacy council as a tutor. When she was a child, her dream was to own an elephant that she could keep in her back yard. She gave that up in favor of a dog malamute/chow mix and two cats. |
