My dear readers,

This morning while I was shoveling the five inches of snow that had piled onto my driveway the day before, a spring songbird sang to me. Startled, I looked up and around -- we simply don't hear the singing of spring songbirds in early January here in the hinterlands of upstate New York. Now, some of you may know that my Mother passed away on Christmas Day, so without skipping a beat, I called "Hi Mom," back to the bird.

The theme of this issue is "New Beginnings." The new year certainly brings us a new beginning. But so, I am finding, and much to my surprise, does death. For the person who passes over, there is certainly a new beginning in the passing into a new realm of existence. But for those left behind, there is a new beginning in discovering the person we become when we lose someone close to us, because we will never, ever be the same again.

That bird taught me something precious this morning. Despite the cold, the snow, the dormancy -- all that is winter -- there is always spring, there is always a song, there is always hope, there is always life.

Now for a few words about this issue. For those of you aspiring novelists out there, don't miss our Contest where as the winner, you will actually get your novel published by MY-E-BOOK (www.my-e-book.com). Check it out below to get the complete scoop.

Need to clear the cobwebs out of your gray matter after all that holiday food and frivolity? Then this issue's Keen Association puzzle is for you!

Gratitude works miracles: so tells Pamela Beers in her moving Editorial, "New Beginnings: Gratitude."

Need some help planning that new beginning? Technical Writing Editor Judy Shenouda shows how you can use the skill of mind mapping to kick those plans of yours into gear in her story, "Happy Trails."

For you contest connoisseurs, Grace Tierney gives the lowdown on essay contests in "Getting Personal: Writing Essays for Contests."

Newly crowned Screenwriting and Playwriting Editor, our queen of film and stage, Christina Hamlett, interviews Martin Denton in her article, "Stage Struck: Why Theater Endures."

Back to new years resolutions and new beginnings, check out Terrie Relf's "Adopt Beginner's Mind When Writing."

Ever think you could do a better job writing instructions than say, the author of your VCR's instruction book? If so, you might like my article, "Easy as 1, 2, 3…"

Need a hug? Don't we all! Let Stephanie Olsen embrace you with her advice to a newby freelancer in "Group Hug."

Our curmudgeon is back! This issue Pamela Beers discusses the fine art of navigating snowdrifts while clad in goggles, flippers, and snorkel.

Last, and also courtesy of our prolific Pam, don't miss the News, chewy little tidbits with a twist!!

So there you have it. I hope you enjoy every inch of the issue, and may you embark upon a happy, healthy, and productive new beginning of your own.

Keep that ink flowing and those keyboards a'clacking!

My warm regards,

Mary Anne Donovan
