Top 10 Travel Markets

by Sharon Pettis

Now that school’s out and summer is finally here, I’ve put together a list of markets to take with you on your vacation, or maybe even help you plan one! Look forward to some cool savings, as some of these magazines pay your expenses while on assignment. I’ve narrowed the list down to mostly high-profile travel markets (and because summer is the time for excess, I've included an extra one.) Enjoy!

This market is known as the crème de la crème of inflight publications. They are not easy to break into, but pay very well. Attache is distributed to travelers on U.S. Airways and is a great way to get into writing for other inflight magazines. They look for very tight writing, an unusual angle, and a focus on “the best of something.”

See website for queries, query with published clips via email or mail (include SASE for snail-mail). Allow 6 weeks for reply. Buys first global serial rights and sometimes pay expenses of writers on assignment. Pays $1/wd for non-fiction, $500-2000 for columns on acceptance.

While very little information was available for this market, with a circulation of over 7 million, this one is great to put in your portfolio and will definitely put some food in your fridge. You may want to renegotiate with this magazine before selling all rights. If you do sell all rights, your rate of pay should be much higher than normal magazines.

Query with published clips via mail (include SASE and direct to appropriate editor), they buy all rights.

Spa Magazine is a new market that looks promising. Keep in mind the title, so all your articles should relate back to this theme. You might want to subscribe to newsletters for sample style. This market is probably one of the highest paying out there. They are not likely to use new writers for features, but writing several short pieces could land you big money in the end. In addition to the magazine, they have two regional editions (East and West), and several departments to break into (your best bet is the front and back sections). Be sure to address your query to the appropriate editor, as there are several contacts at the magazine. You can check out their masthead at the website.
