Top 10 Markets with Editorial Calendars
on the Internet
by Sharon Pettis
Why bother pitching a query to a magazine that already knows what they are going to publish next year? You know the magazine, study their guidelines, and still receive the rejection slips with the cryptic message “doesn't fit our current needs.” But what you don't have is the insider scoop on what the magazine's needs really are.
The irony is that the advertising department of the magazine freely gives this info out to anyone placing an ad. These editorial calendars are used to give the ad buyer the freedom to place their ad in one or several issues of the magazine that will be read by the people who will want to buy their products.
As a writer, this information gives you the power to fill a need of the Editorial department. The final magazine is written two months before it goes to subscribers. Given the sometimes lengthy response time from editors on queries, you can get a faster response if you know what issue they are in the midst of pulling together. So, a query at just the right time, say, two to four months before the issue hits the newsstands, might fill a hole that the editor has been desparately trying to patch, especially since the staff writers are already hard at work on the next issue.
A recent web search provided me with the 2004 Editorial Calendars of over 7000 magazines. While it can be hard to find contact info for the editorial staff, I was able to unearth names, email addresses, and peruse a few sample articles to know what the magazine is all about. After looking through hundreds of calendars, this is just a sample of what I found.
