Job Sources on The Net
by Brigitte Aflalo-Calderon
In today's digital world, more than ever before, information is power. The Internet makes it possible to gain access and exchange information across continents in no time and often at little or no cost. In this New World Order, speed is essential to success. That is, speed in locating, retrieving and delivering the right information.
This means that wherever you, the writer, editor, and reporter are geographically located, you need every advantage you can get to quickly find freelance, working from-home or permanent assignments. To help you achieve your writing goals, we have selected a list of websites that provide reliable information on job openings in all areas of the industry, both nationwide and around the world.
How, where, and what do you search? It would seem that the more job sources you visit the more you multiply your chances to find the right job opportunity. Yes, but and then, like I did when I first started using job source sites, you may soon find yourself trapped in an endless, but exhilarating, search. You might end up like me when I started exploring the web for jobs -- with a fat list of writing possibilities and not even a comma jotted down on a sheet of paper. To save you from turning into a surf addict, I'd like to share a few tips:
-First, carefully screen sites listing job opportunities and eliminate those that do not correspond to your needs.
-Second, choose sites 4 (5 maximum) and subscribe to them or visit them regularly. Many sites are free. Some require a subscription charge.
-Third, select writing newsletters (3-4), which also feature market updates.
-Fourth, set a day during the week or a couple of hours at the end of each day (don't start in the morning because you will end up spending all day exploring the Net) that you will devote to your job search (retrieve information, narrow down your choices, reply to ads, send query letters, prepare articles, etc). One of the rules to make it as a writer is to seize the opportunity as soon as it presents itself. What are you waiting for?
