Of Libraries and Steinbeck
In 1902, noted author John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California. Salinas was featured in Steinbeck’s “East of Eden,” written in 1952. Who could ever imagine that this blue-collar hometown of 150,000 and Steinbeck’s birthplace would face losing all three libraries in 2005? In March, dozens of celebrities, authors and citizens protested at a ‘Read-In,’ in hopes that local officials would change their plans. The protestors were successful with a last-minute reprieve. At least for now. The libraries in Salinas will remain open through the end of the calendar year.
Steinbeck, and his mother, a teacher who taught him the love of books, are smiling for now!
