Black Dog in the Roadway, Tail Not Wagging

by Mary Anne Donovan

I felt light
after a long winter, sang
a Beatles tune,
enjoyed shadows,
open windows, rushing air,
and came upon
a black dog in the roadway,
frenzied, spinning crazily, trying to get up, be
normal
go happily
on its way
that spring afternoon.
