Running hot and cold

by Melissa Booth

Blaring sunlight
Begins to scorch

Endless summer bonfires
Not so accidentally burn her

Heavy humid air stifles
Like his constant attention

She sees the flower he gave her
Has started to wilt

She prays for the relief
Of winter rain

When she can toss his suffocating
Affections down the sewer

Curl up in healing sadness
And relish the taste of freedom
