Markets for Writers
Written by Stephanie Olsen

November 30, 2004

Hello again everybody,

An interesting discussion took place regarding reprints: a great place to re-sell articles is the religious market. If the piece is non-denominational, you won't even have to touch it up; and if it's a "generic" seasonal (ie., love under the mistletoe), you can easily change references to  say Valentine's Day (ie., love among the chocolates) without much effort. One writer sold the same piece, without revisions, six times. Now, that's recycling!

In this week's issue of Writer JustMarkets, from Christian newspapers to gardening quarterlies, from baseball nuts to earth-conscious homeowners, there are readers out there waiting just for you.

As always, good writing!

Christian Week

ChristianWeek is an independent, subscription-based, national Christian newspaper published every two weeks (25 issues per year).

Primary need is news. Writers are encouraged to submit articles about people or news events in their own region or denomination that would be of interest and importance to readers in other church communities and areas of the country.

Query first. Because of the short turnaround time of newspapers, phone calls or e-mail messages are preferred to query letters by mail.

Pays 10 cents/assigned word. Note re rights: All articles published in ChristianWeek may be selected for posting and archiving on several web sites owned or in partnership with it, unless permission is refused by the writer at acceptance of the assignment.

Could you use gigs like this?
JustMarkets delivers, virtually every day!

Copy Editor
Telecommute

I'd like you to copy edit a 17,000-word semi-technical manual for intelligent lay people on the legal alternative to physician-assisted suicide. It is a very dense document in terms of the amount of information per page, although I have another document of illustrative stories that will accompany it (approx 10,000 words). I am open to your broader recommendations beyond typos and grammar.

Please inform me about your knowledge, experience, and interest in the end-of-life area.

You must know how to use MS WORD editing features (alt T T H -- to highlight additions and deletions and alt M to add comments).

It would be a plus if you knew how to alphabetize (using a table to sort) the literature citations, and you could hyperlink the references in the text to the literature citation section, although that is a less imperative goal.

Expected time-frame between my e-mailing you a document and your getting the edited document back to me: 2 to 3 days. (Not including hyperlinking.)

Compensation: $16 per hour or you bid on the total project
