"Back to College" is a news and information resource for adult re-entry students pursuing professional development or an advanced degree.

Articles must address issues of importance to the older student: obtaining financial aid, distance education, finding the right program (comparing costs and quality of curriculum), graduate school, or attaining academic excellence. Career management and articles on successful transition are appreciated. We are especially looking for stories on the re-entry student experience. Articles may be anecdotal, or include examples, illustrations, direct quotes, and resources where readers can obtain more information. Web resources cited are desirable for an online publication.

Pays $50 - $75 for original feature articles approximately 1,250 - 1,500 words in length, 30 days after pub for first-serial rights (including the right to archive the article online on an indefinite basis), and the world-wide, royalty free and non-exclusive license to use, distribute, reproduce, publish, and incorporate the article (in whole or in part) in any subsidiary product or reprint.

The Meat Socket Exploring The Darker Realms Of Literature, Music and Cinema

The Meat Socket is looking for original, unpublished works of horror, or dark fiction. Up to 10,000 words in length

Minimum payment for a story is $25.00 Canadian and upward, paid upon publication. Payment gives us North American print and electronic rights plus archival and promotional rights for 6 months. After six months rights revert back to author.

The Alarm! Newspaper

Local Santa Cruz, CA weekly welcomes query letters with solid, original ideas and angles. Please submit queries by noon on Friday for consideration at our editorial meeting. We handle late-breaking stories on a case by case basis. E-mail queries to queries [at] the-alarm.com

• We pay contributors 13¢ per printed word upon publication. Our flat rate for columnists is $75 for each 500- to 750-word column . For artwork and photos, we pay $25 per accepted piece.
• Checks will be issued on the 5th and 20th of each month. Additional expenses may be reimbursed upon advanced approval.
• If for any reason an accepted article is not printed within one month of acceptance, we compensate the contributor with a $50 "kill fee".

"Government Executive" is a business magazine serving executives and managers in the federal government, published by the National Journal Group Inc. It appears twice a month from April through November, and monthly during the rest of the year. Its 75,000 subscribers are high-ranking civilian and military officials who carry out the laws that define the government's role in US economy and society.

Oregon Quarterly
The Northwest Perspective from the University of Oregon

The "Oregon Quarterly" addresses topics of state and regional interest (ideas, issues and personalities) using the resources of UO faculty and alumni. The UO benefits from its involvement in these stories, not as their subject matter. Our goal is to reach a broad, well-educated regional audience, whether or not they have ties to the UO.

If the topic has a contemporary regional interest, and if UO involvement can be demonstrated (through faculty or alumni participation), we'd like to hear about it. We prefer brief query letters (with SASE) that show the flavor of the proposed article and your writing style. Submit clips that demonstrate your ability. If you don't have a story idea but would like to be considered for assignments , submit clips with a cover letter explaining your interests and experience.

We invite queries for features and UO alumni profiles. Our features generally run 2,500-3,000 words; short subjects run about 500­1,000 words. We pay 20 cents a word on acceptance (after requested revisions), plus reasonable expenses (with receipts), provided they are cleared by us in advance. For contracted stories we do not accept, we pay a kill fee of 20 percent the contracted amount. We generally follow the Chicago Manual of Style .

Vermont Life

"Vermont Life" is interested in any article, query, story idea, photograph or photo essay that has to do with Vermont.

Our text rates for feature articles range between $350 and $800 depending on the length and research involved in preparing the manuscript. Most articles run approximately 1,800 words and the average fee is $450. We buy FNASR.

Canadian Gardening

Canadian Gardening is a national magazine aimed at the avid home gardener. Our readers are city gardeners with tiny lots, country gardeners with rolling acreage, indoor gardeners, rooftop gardeners, and enthusiastic beginners and experienced veterans.

We look for appealing, reader-friendly writing. Send samples of your work when submitting a story proposal. Proposals should be no more than one page with enough detail to show how you'd approach the subject.

Depending on complexity of story and amount of work involved, our rates range from $125 and up for short news items, reviews, or how-to pieces (200 to 400 words), to $350 and up for features (about 500 to 2,000 words). Fees for each story are set by the editor at the time of assignment. We pay on acceptance , and cover reasonable expenses such as long-distance calls to gather research and out-of-town mileage to do interviews. Receipts are required.

StrategyPageCom

"StrategyPage" provides quick, easy online access   to what is going on in military affairs. We cover armed forces world wide, as well as up to date reporting on wars and hotspots wherever they may be.

Articles can be up to 10,000 to 15,000 words , but the main text (that appears when users first open that page) must be no more than 1,000-2,000 words (preferably under a thousand words). In other words, the main text is, in effect, a summary of the articles main points, with more detail made available via hyperlinks.

We pay $200-$300 for large articles.

In some cases, especially for current events topics, we may commission extensive overhauls of an existing article.
