Find Your Niche: Be In DemandNiches have niches. Sounds like a Dr. Seuss title. It isn’t. For you freelancers out there who are talented, with a severe work ethic, devoted to your trade, and relentless enough about writing for a living, go out and find a niche at which you will be spectacular. Stake a claim in a corner of the niche market, one that will make you want to jump out of bed in the morning without an alarm clock. There are plenty of niche industries in which to write: Advertising, B2B (business to business), B2C (business to customer), education, entertainment, finance, medicine, non-profit, publishing (online/offline), recreation, science, research/marketing, real estate, and technology. In addition to the tens of corners you could fit into in each of the above industries, every industry has tens of freelance writing niche types: creative writing, ghost writing, proposal and business plan writing, PR (public relations) writing, technical writing, and web content writing. One writer specializes in mental health/disability writing as well as creative and memoir writing with web content development being one of her favorite freelance niche types. I have two favorite niche industries. One is education the other is veterinary equine medicine. In the niche industry of education, I combined my business background with my teaching experience and wrote a proposal to the local school district promoting my tutorial service. My remuneration from that project is an indirect result of a well -written business proposal. Simply put, the proposal niche fit into the niche (corner) of the education industry. In depth knowledge of both horses and their care has created more than one niche for me. I have been asked to keep a journal of my care-taking practices at the farm by our veterinarian. It was suggested that I submit my knowledge of nutrition and overall proper barn management skills to veterinary journals. The niche industry of medicine, with it’s own specialized corner (equine veterinary), has given me a chance to educate the public on proper health care for our equine friends…another freelance opportunity. Writing is so much more fun when it’s a good fit. I can’t wait until I get up in the morning. So, get creative, pool your talents and find a niche of your own…and remember niches have niches. |
