What’s Hot For Readers

Readers are flocking to the celebrity magazine category. Abe Peck, chairman of the magazine program at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, said that there is an endless demand by readers for celebrities. Gemstar-TV Guide International is launching a new weekly magazine called Inside TV, a mass- market magazine devoted to TV shows and their stars. Most sales of the new title are expected at the newsstand, unlike the subscription based TV Guide.

TV Guide remains the biggest selling weekly magazine in the U.S. with a circulation of 9 million. Gemstar is not worried that the new title may steal readership from TV Guide. The range of television programming is so vast it is a huge area yet to be explored.

Celebrity magazines have enjoyed significant sales growth recently at newsstands as readers’ crave news about popular television personalities. Inside TV will be different from its rivals; People, (Time Warner); US Weekly (Wenner Media); and In TouchWeekly (USA-Bauer Publishing); because it will focus solely on television.

Polish up those interview skills, sharpen your pencils, and go find a TV celebrity to interview. This could be a whole new niche to showcase your talents.
