decoration magazines grew from 47 titles in 1994 to 142 titles in 2004,
out-pacing any other magazine category for growth. Dog, wedding, and
lifestyle magazines have also grown over the last ten years according
to the newest edition of the Standard Periodical Directory published by
Oxbridge Communications, Inc. The directory is the largest
directory of U.S. and Canadian periodicals, with information on 56,042
magazines, journals, newspapers, newsletters, directories, and
yearbooks in its latest edition. The new edition is completely current
with more than 4,207 new titles and more than 38,480 updated listings. Magazine
categories declining in number of publications from 1994 to 2004 are
in-house publications, from 365 publications to 88 titles; general
interest magazines, from 104 to 27; television and video, from 172 to
87 publications; and environment and ecology, from 140 to 76. Categories
with the largest amount of publications of all types, magazines,
journals, and newsletters, for 2004 are college student with 3,069
titles, medicine with 2,797 titles, law with 2,087 titles, and business
and industry with 1,046 titles. Creative new concepts that
sparked the periodical industry over the last ten years are free
newspapers targeting commuters, and a previously untapped youth market.
Health issue articles in newsletters and magazines arose to meet the
population’s passion for staying fit. Again, there are
