Airing Some Laundry

by Shelly Steele

Remember the agony of the college application process?  Those 500 word personal essays that were suppose to tell those prestigious, or not-so-prestigious (depending on your opinion) academic institution admissions boards why you should be accepted over the hundreds, or even thousands of others who were applying.  Who could forget that essay—probably one of the pivotal pieces of writing in most of our histories.  What I want to know is why don’t those same schools want another essay from students upon commencement?  Wouldn’t they like to hear about all the things that recent graduates or alumni have to say about the school?  Well, here at WOL, we’re definitely not a college admissions board; yet, we want to hear your personal essay, with a twist.  Here is your chance to tell it all—joys, grievances, or questions—about your alma mater, in 500 words or less.  This is your chance to tell your former institution what you think—did the school provide adequate education; did you feel that the school met your standards—academically and/or socially; do you have a professor you’d like to thank?; and so on.  If you would feel more comfortable, you may choose to omit the name of the institution by using a substitute name, such as Liberal Arts College of New York.  Have fun!

Winners from the previous WOL contest will be announced in an upcoming issue.
